hokies220 Ballot for 2017 Week 4

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Sept. 17, 2017, 11:12 a.m.

Overall Rationale: Top 4 are who I'd put in the playoffs right now, from different conferences. Otherwise tried to rank as best as I could by resume. Meaning generally two P5 wins are highly regarded as are having not played any FCS teams. As always have to have a winning record and wins against FCS teams don't count.

Rank Team Reason
Clemson Tigers Two P5 wins, really just look incredibly dominant on defense.
Oklahoma Sooners I think overall Bama has the stronger G5 wins, but OU has the better P5 win.
Alabama Crimson Tide Still Bama
USC Trojans Really struggled to figure out who to put here, ultimately went with USC just because of the two P5 wins over anyone from the B1G or SDSU.
Oklahoma State Cowboys Ahead of PSU because of the better game against a common opponent and better wins in general. Tough game hosting TCU coming up.
Penn State Nittany Lions Goes to play @ Iowa in their first tough game of the season.
San Diego State Aztecs Likely too high right now, but this is respect for the schedule. Plus Penny is an absolute monster averaging 8+ YPC and nearly 200 yds a game. Should absolutely be the favorite for the NY6 slot right now.
Duke Blue Devils The win against Northwestern is still good, the win against Baylor isn't as good but part of that is because of how bad Baylor is. Still though I gotta go by own rules. They play UNC and Miami the next two weeks so we should know more quickly.
Wisconsin Badgers Second half team and looks like a normal physically imposing their will on you Badgers team.
Michigan Wolverines They've really struggled on offense, but special teams and defense have come up huge for them. Purdue looks much improved and could derail their season early.
Minnesota Golden Gophers Yes, Oregon State is bad. But they haven't scheduled any FCS games
Memphis Tigers Managed to pull the upset at home over UCLA. I'm really wishing they had played that game against UCF because it intrigues me so much.
Mississippi State Bulldogs Dominated LSU and really just did everything right.
Georgia Bulldogs Meh.
Virginia Tech Hokies Killed ECU after trailing early, but JMU and WVU also killed ECU so meh. Clemson comes to Blacksburg in two weeks.
Vanderbilt Commodores Likely too high especially with MTSU losing, although props to them for scheduling three P5 games OOC, and with their date with Bama next week looming large. I think Mason has a team he can absolutely be proud of though. Brutal three game stretch coming up.
TCU Horned Frogs Bit of a shootout with SMU in the first half, but manage to completely shut down a very talented Courtland Sutton. Big game coming in Stillwater.
Washington State Cougars Yes, Oregon State is bad. Boise is good though, and the Cougs seem to have found something resembling a defense. Cakewalk against Nevada coming before USC comes to Pullman.
Oregon Ducks Went on the road and steamrolled Wyoming. Nebraska taking a loss didn't help their SOS though. Their defense will be tested by ASU this week.
Washington Huskies Won easily, but the schedule is still just so weak.
Louisville Cardinals Couldn't even compete with Clesmon honestly, and if it weren't for a respectable schedule thus far especially Purdue winning they would be lower.
Ohio State Buckeyes Did what they needed to against Army. Still not completely sold on the Buckeyes though.
Kentucky Wildcats Somehow they just always have South Carolina figured out, I think that's a solid win. But now it's thirty years of futility against Florida coming to town.
Maryland Terrapins Still sitting ranked because I value that win against Texas.
Utah Utes There were lots of team I considered putting here but went with the Utes. Next few out in no order are Colorado, USF, Toledo, Houston, and Iowa.
