Overall Rationale: Football rankings is new to me. The last couple years i've been doing power rankings on r/baseball as the representative for the Reds, so I do have some critical thinking skills (at least you know I hope). My methodology is quite simple, I just rank based on my personal beliefs of where these teams should be. I know some people probably have or use some advanced algorithm or system they use, but not me baby, for me it's just my mind. So prepare.
Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | As a gator fan, I am in hell, Georgia has shown no indication they're gonna stop being the top team in the country so far this year. |
| Texas Longhorns | Personally I think Texas is tied with Alabama as the 2nd best team in the country, I don't think they stand out in any particular way above Bama, I just think they get the slight edge with Ewers. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | I may very well be wrong in this thinking, but I think the SEC championship game is likely going to be Bama and Georgia yet again. I like DeBoer as a head coach, and I think he's just going to pick right back up with the Alabama dynasty and I hate that fact. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | The Buckeyes may very well be the true 2nd best team in the country, but I need to see more of Will Howard before I really buy into them. He showed flashes of being great against Akron, I just want to see some more first. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | You have to appreciate what Lane Kiffin has done for the Rebels. He's accomplishing things that no coach really has at Ole Miss, and this year they look like a true playoff team. Big questions on their defense though as per usual with Kiffin. Rebel fans you don't mind if we poach Lane in this off season's coaching carousel do you? |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | I don't buy it. I just don't okay? I've spent 15 years of my life watching college football now, and I feel Notre Dame is just doing the same thing every year where they just fail to impress against major opponents. Maybe I feel this way because for most of my time watching College football their coach was Brian Kelly, so my vision of them may be unfairly clouded. I hope Marcus Freeman can break that trend, but for now I'm going with what I know. This is your chance to break the Notre Dame narrative Marcus. |
| Missouri Tigers | Missouri is a tough team to gauge but I'm really liking what they're doing on both sides of the ball so far. They seem to be playing that old early 2010s style of SEC football where the defense dominated all, I kinda miss that era to be honest. |
| Oregon Ducks | What in the hell was that Oregon? I really hope that was just a test run of what the team would look like because that was some ugly ass football. I'm talking post Joe Dirt David Spade ugly. I'm talking your mom ugly. Yeah it was that bad. Please don't do that again. |
| Michigan Wolverines | It definitely feels like if anything is going to hold Michigan back this year it's going to be that offense. It's up to whether Sherrone Moore can bring that offense up to even just last year's level. If he can do that, Michigan is definitely looking at the playoffs. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Ahh yeah baby another year of Penn State football. I cannot wait for the inevitable 2 losses to top 10 B1G teams. But don't you worry Nittany Lion fans, now you can still have playoffs. It feels like this new format was made specifically for the James Franklin's of the world. Always the bridesmaid never the bride, but now with the playoffs, they can jump head first into the Orgy that is the playoffs. Just remember to bring your burlesque mask. |
| Miami Hurricanes | Miami exposed every single thing wrong with the Napier led Gators in just 60 minutes. A season's worth of problems put on display for the whole country to witness. I genuinly don't even know if I can consider Miami as "back" in that sense because Florida is just that bad. If you swapped Miami (FL) with Miami (OH) I honestly don't think I can argue that the outcome of the game would have been different. I think what Miami did do was cement themselves as the team to beat in ACC. They did it by thoroughly dismantling a team that's been drowning on dry land the last 2 seasons now. It's not even the loss really, if Miami just beat us 24-17 or even 31-17, I could have lived with it because that means we at least put up a fight. The only thing the Gators can hope now is that Napier gets thrown into the street before he can waste the career of DJ Lagway assuming he even wants to stay with this dumpster fire program once Billy is gone. |
| USC Trojans | Has Lincoln Riley finally figured out what the word defense means? For so long this term has alluded him. Defense. What a concept, and such a baffling one. But perhaps he has figured it out? After many long years has Lincoln Riley seen the correct wise sage on the mountaintop to reveal to him the secrets of defense? We shall see. |
| Utah Utes | Much like your mom Cam Rising is old, very old. That's to Utah's advantage though, he brings the veteran presence the team needed. Now we just need to see how long the team as a whole can survive in these new waters of the Big 12. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | It's year 3 of the Venables regime, and the expectations of Oklahoma are big. Year 1 was the whole program adjusting to his coaching style leading to a 7-6 record, year 2 saw improvements across the board with a 10-3 record, so the expectations now of course are that they improve on that and hopefully make the playoffs. Things may be looking bright for the Sooners if the correct improvements are made. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Things in Knoxville seem to be on the up and up and that spells more hell as a Gators fan. Nico Iamaleava unfortunately looks like just the generational game changer he was expected to be. Great. |
| Kansas Jayhawks | I feel like this has to be the Jayhawk's last year to truly break out and do something. I find it hard to imagine Leipold stays for another year, especially if they do go on a run or make a major bowl. I know he's already 60, but with the success he's had I can see a bigger program making a go at him if they're truly desperate. And you know what? I would personally love to witness a competitive Kansas. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | I think that this season can cement Chris Klieman and the Wildcats as a perennial playoff team. Yes, that is my wild prediction of the year folks, I think Kansas State wins the Big 12 and gets entry into Playoff. |
| Arizona Wildcats | The post Jedd Fisch era at Arizona is going to be interesting to witness. Bret Brennan was an odd choice for replacement in my opinion, but if Fifita can just do Fifita things I think he can drag them to the realm of 9 wins. |
| LSU Tigers | The Year that Brian Kelly finally gets over the hump as head coach and wins something significant....is not this year. At least I don't think it will be. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | It's going to be a tremendously sad moment when Mike Gundy retires. The consistency he has brought Oklahoma State is something this Gator fan can only dream of. I can definitely see OK State settling down for yet another 10 win season, and who knows maybe if they beat the right teams we can see Mike Gundy in the playoffs. And wouldn't that be a sight huh? |
| Washington Huskies | I'm not saying that not ranking Washington in the Top 15 wasn't somewhat justified, they lost basically everyone after all, but I think leaving them out of the top 25 entirely is kinda severly disrespectful to a team that made the National Championship last year. I'm keeping them in my top 25 until I see evidence otherwise suggesting they shouldn't be. And hey, judging by their schedule that reckoning may not come until October. |
| Iowa Hawkeyes | Ahh hell yeah bro the forward pass is for SISSIES. |
| Memphis Tigers | Memphis I feel like is the perennial underdog. Everyone always seems to undervalue or underestimate them. They were a 10 win team last year and never got ranked, with one of their 3 losses being a 1 score loss to Missouri. They returned a big chunk of that 2023 team, so I believe they can at least replicate last year. Do that and Ryan Silverfield may be looking at some offers from major programs. |
| Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets | Let's all laugh at Florida State. Everybody point and laugh. Yeah we might have gotten the shit kicked out of us by Miami but Florida State has lost 2 games already, both to ACC teams. Everybody laugh at their misery. Thank you Georgia Tech. |
| NC State Wolfpack | NC State has always been that consistent good but never great team that just doesn't do enough to get true recognition year after year. Unfortunately I don't see that changing much this year, but NC State expecting 8 and 9 win seasons basically every year is still an accomplishment. Remember, it can always be worse. |
