Overall Rationale: Early season rankings are based largely on expected results versus other ranked teams, and as the season goes leans more heavily on actual resume. By the end of the season, rankings are based entirely on resume. I lean heavily into head to head results and results against common opponents. I also sort teams into 6 tiers based on championship/playoff likelihood. Tier 1: Championship Frontrunners, near lock to make playoffs Tier 2: Championship Contenders with excellent chance of making playoffs Tier 3: Decent possibility to make playoffs, unlikely to compete for championship Tier 4: Outside playoff shot Tier 5: Unlikely to make playoffs but not quite eliminated Tier 6: No shot at playoffs
Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Tier 1. Better at nearly every position from last season. Schedule sets up nicely for likely playoff appearance. |
| Oregon Ducks | Tier 1. Tons of talent on both sides of the ball. Perhaps best passing game in country. |
| Georgia Bulldogs | Tier 1. Beck is an elite QB and there's tons of talent. Could very easily be #1. |
| Texas Longhorns | Tier 2. Tons of talent on offense but a few question marks on defense. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Tier 2. Highly talented team but lots of changes. Can they continue to be dominant? |
| Oklahoma Sooners | Tier 2 |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Tier 2. Great defense, but what's the offense going to look like? |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Tier 2 |
| Utah Utes | Tier 2. Clear favorite in the Big 12 with Cam Rising healthy. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Tier 3. Highly talented team with question marks and a new coach. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | Tier 3 |
| Clemson Tigers | Tier 3 |
| Florida State Seminoles | Tier 3 |
| LSU Tigers | Tier 3 |
| Texas A&M Aggies | Tier 3 |
| Missouri Tigers | Tier 3 |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | Tier 3 |
| Miami Hurricanes | Tier 3. Seems like the talent is there. Can the Hurricanes take the next step? |
| Iowa Hawkeyes | Tier 4. Defense figures to be great but can the new OC get their offense going? |
| Virginia Tech Hokies | Tier 4 |
| Wisconsin Badgers | Tier 4 |
| Kansas Jayhawks | Tier 4 |
| Florida Gators | Tier 4. A monster schedule makes for a daunting road ahead. 8 wins might be enough though |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Tier 4 |
| Arizona Wildcats | Tier 4 |
