JetoGrov Ballot for 2023 Week 6

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Oct. 2, 2023, 6:27 p.m.

Overall Rationale: Trying my best to do a resume-based poll, things are starting to take form this year!! Apologies to Marshall and Liberty, the only two unbeaten teams I don't have ranked; just don't feel the quality of wins is high enough at this moment. Also, apologies to WVU, I really wanted to rank you but it just felt wrong to leave Oregon State out of the ranking; the back-half of the Top 25 is always tougher than the front-half. For this week, will gauge how right/wrong my preseason expectations were of each team.

Rank Team Reason
Texas Longhorns Wins over Bama and Kansas move the Horns into the Top spot after this week. Preseason "right" rating: 10/10...called the Horns beating Bama, had them winning the Big XII, did in fact believe they were back
Ohio State Buckeyes Win @ND is one of the better ones in the country, even if it was only by the hair on their chinny chin chin. Game this week vs MD will actually be pretty fun to watch. Preseason "right" rating: 9/10...I'm only docking myself a point here b/c I thought they would lose to ND (which they ya know, almost did); was worried that line/QB play would be shaky...and, oh, look at that, it has been
Florida State Seminoles Win over LSU doesn't look quite as cool, but that and the win @Clemson still give the Noles a Top 5 ranking. Preseason "right" rating: 9/10...thought they would lose to Clemson (which they maybe sort of should have) but thought this was one of the ACC's best team
Washington State Cougars The wins over Wisconsin and Oregon St are two of the better wins anyone has so far in the young season, and they look even better this week which moves the Cougs past a few teams they were behind last week Preseason "right" rating: 3/10...very happy to be wrong, Wazzu is a fucking delight. They have my heart #CamWard4Heisman
Miami Hurricanes I prolly like the A&M win too much (which is why the Canes are so high), but I think it's a solid win and better what a lot of teams have at this point Preseason "right" rating: 2/10...yeah, I didn't even think about this team in the preseason this year much less did I expect 2021-form TVD
Penn State Nittany Lions Wins over WVU and Iowa are solid-not great wins Preseason "right" rating: 8/10...weirdly, I expected this team to be better? Still mostly right on them, but I'm starting to have doubts that they'll win the B10 or beat Michigan/OSU
Oregon Ducks Dominant win over Colorado (which is better than some can say *glares at trojans*) and I still give them decent credit for grabbing a win in Lubbock Preseason "right" rating: 5/10 or 0/10...didn't really have any takes on the ducks this preseason. Kind of thought TxTech would beat them, but outside of that I didn't really think much of these guys
Missouri Tigers Win over KS State is the best any SEC team has so far (crazy FG and all) Preseason "right" rating: 0/10....there were absolutely no thoughts about Mizzou for me this offseason
Georgia Bulldogs Slowly but surely gaining decent wins (plus other people are losing)....still not sure what "real" game this team plays this year, but can't dodge the feeling that someone is going to catch them one of these weeks Preseason "right" rating: 8/10....I mean, with a schedule this easy it was hard to expect anything else out of Dawgs at this point. Docking myself 2 points b/c I thought they would be better than they've shown so far
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Progressing from a last second loss vs OSU to a last second win @Duke earns the 1-loss Irish a top 10 spot. I'm choosing to see this as Duke is actually quite good (though w/o Riley there may not be much proof of that from here on) and ND's only loss barely happened so I won't dock them too much for it. Preseason "right" rating: 6/10...I called 9-3 and this team looks better than that...then again, they could easily be 4-2 right now, and still play USC and Clemson so we'll see
Washington Huskies Look, look, look I know I know. UW has been absolutely drubbing people (besides....Arizona?). A lot of people have them much higher than this; hell, some people are giving them 1st place votes. And I get it, the Huskies have looked incredible, offensive juggernaut. However, I do these rankings based on resumes and when you look at Washington's....i mean, what's the best win? Boise? @MichiganState? Have you seen Michigan State??? There are tougher games ahead, the rankings will work themself out, cream to the top yada yada Preseason "right" rating: 5/10...see Oregon
Michigan Wolverines We all (myself very much included) love to dunk on the fact that Michigan's schedule is literally 2.5 months of practice...but as the season progresses Michigan's resume is...gulp...actually looking better??? I know. Gross. But UNLV has looked solid so far, BGSU just beat GaTech (which isn't saying much, but is still a P5 win), and Rutgers is probably a bowl team this year. It's still a laughable slate, don't worry haters, but Michigan is slowly working their way up the rankings. Preseason "right" rating: 8/10...See UGA
North Carolina Tar Heels Okay yeah, having UNC at 5 last week was ludicrous. The SCar win doesn't look that good, nor do wins over Minnesota and Pitt (I watched Pitt v. VaTech this week....and, uh, imma hurl just thinking about it)...App State is fine. They're only this high because they technically have three P5 wins. Preseason "right" rating: 3/10...didn't think they were that great, look like a decent ACC team
Oklahoma Sooners Sort of like UW, the sooners have been impressive but when you actually look at the resume, the best win is....SMU? HUGE GAME this week will work things out. Preseason "right" rating: 7/10...thought they were the 2nd best team in the Big XII and they seem to be the 2nd best team in the Big XII
Fresno State Bulldogs Easily the highest G5 team with wins @Purdue and @AZstate (whom they beat more than USC...which is why they're higher than USC) Preseason "right" rating: 0/10....didn't think about Fresno State, had Boise winning the MWC
USC Trojans Yeah they win...but man they really don't care about playing on the defensive side of the ball. If Sean Lewis knew/had tried to run an effective 6-minute offense while down 2-scores then USC could have messed around and gone to OT with a team that doesn't have an offensive line (speaking of, how do you let Colorado run for 100+ yards on you?). I dunno, this is a Lincoln Riley team through and through. Pro: We're probably living in a world where Caleb Williams will be a multi-time Heisman winner, Con: this team is going to get dunked on by Oregon and Utah and then lose in a half-ass Cotton Bowl to Fresno State Preseason "right" rating: 4/10...expected more out of them, had them winning the Pac-12, but I don't really see it anymore
Duke Blue Devils Oh man...we were so close...so close to living in a world where we ranked Duke what? Like, 3? 2? 1?!?!?!?! But Hartmann did stupid, sexy things on 4 and 16th and here we are. Still think the Clemson win is good (and less fluky now), and that this team is one of the better in the ACC. Hope they get RIley back in time to mount a legitimate ACC title run. Preseason "right" rating: 3/10....thought they were plucky but that the schedule would be too tough for them, but man they have met the challenge head on.
Alabama Crimson Tide Biggest winner of Ole Miss beating LSU? These guys. Funny how Bama is now the "SEC team finding their way into the back of the rankings cause SEC" Preseason "right" rating: 10/10...I will absolutely take my roses on this one, called bad vibes, called Texas loss, had them at 9-3, I'm a genius....they're going to go 12-1 and win the SEC, aren't they?
Maryland Terrapins Holy offense! Turtle scooting!!! Turtle scooting!!! Preseason "right" rating: 0/10...lol, who thinks about Maryland football besides Brad Cooper in Wedding Crashers, would be real funny if they beat OSU
Louisville Cardinals Another week, another uninspiring Louisville win. But hey, winning at @NCState is hard so credit where credit is due Preseason "right" rating: 7/10....we all said the schedule was easy, and look at that, the schedule was easy
Kentucky Wildcats The Rock, Paper, Scissors of UK, UT, and UF assumes me. I ranked the red KY team higher because of their win @NCST Preseason "right" rating: 5/10...UK football under Stoops is UK football under stoops
Oregon State Beavers Turns out not having a QB eventually catches up with you, Utah. Good win for the Beavs. Preseason "right" rating: 3/10....see Ole Crimson
Utah Utes Sure they can't throw the ball, but wins over Baylor, UCLA, and UF is still a damn good resume. Good enough for the Utes to stay ranked. Preseason "right" rating: 9/10....I feel like I've been watching the same Utah season for the past 5 years
Air Force Falcons THIS TEAM RUNS!!!!!
James Madison Dukes Can they go to a bowl yet? Win the SBC? Why do we bring teams up from FCS if they can't do anything in FBS?....what's that? Money? CFB and money? right.
