Overall Rationale: Rankings should primarily be reflective of resume, what the team has accomplished on the field, and secondarily be a power ranking of what to expect from the future. This week is particularly difficult as there are a lot of teams that to me are very close in terms of resume
Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Texas Longhorns | Texas has the top strength of record and has looked very good doing it. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Michigan has controlled each game they've played in dominating fashion. Only reason they aren't number one is the schedule has been pretty light to this point |
| Georgia Bulldogs | SP+ is really high on Georgia's effiiciences. They haven't looked as dominant in their games this year to this point to the point where I can't keep them ranked ahead of Texas and Michigan. I think they're treating games like scrimmages because they're confident they can win in the second half if they need to. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Have one of the best wins of the year, look solid on both sides of the ball, however are as close as you can possibly get to being 3-1. |
| Washington Huskies | Solid strength of record and game control. Excellent offensively and not bad defensively. Arizona gave them a good fight this weekend |
| Oregon Ducks | Oregon and Washington are very similar to me, I think Oregon actually might be the better team, but the schedule they've played is softer to this point. Here I'd like to point out that I don't think there's a ton of separation between 1 and 8 |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Penn State is a elite defensive football team. The offense has some work to do |
| Florida State Seminoles | Florida State drops two spots because Oregon and Washington played and improved resumes. Florida State has a strong strength of record, but got outgained by over 100 yards to both Boston College and Clemson. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | Oklahoma looked much better offensively this past week and the Texas game is going to be probably be round one of a two game series this year |
| USC Trojans | They are an elite offensive football team, but defensively they are turnover or bust and it's keeping them from moving higher up right now |
| Miami Hurricanes | We'll find out a lot about them in October. They're good on both sides of the ball, won solidly against a very talented Texas A&M team at home. Games against UNC, Clemson over the next couple of weeks will let us know if I'm too low on them |
| Washington State Cougars | Very strong strength of record to this point and an elite passing offense |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | They have Drake Maye and a good offense. How good is the defense? It hasn't played as well since South Carolina. |
| Kentucky Wildcats | Kentucky absolutely dominated Florida on both lines of scrimmage. They have some elite playmakers at the skill positions as well in Davis, Brown and Key |
| Missouri Tigers | Missouri has won three straight solid games, they have a strong strength of record and have looked solid, not spectacular in how they've played |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | They're not far off from being undefeated. They're not far off from being 4-2 either. Both were great games won by the road team |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Very strong defense. Texas has looked better each week. I still wonder if Milroe can win the game for them if it comes to it |
| Maryland Terrapins | I might be too high on Maryland, but they've been doing what they're supposed to do to this part of the schedule. Going to be tough against Ohio State coming off their bye week |
| Duke Blue Devils | Just missed putting away Notre Dame and now have to play a few games with a backup QB. This is a good all around footbal team, but losing your best player and QB at the end of a heartbreaking loss can break a team |
| Oregon State Beavers | Solidly beat down Utah. Good well rounded team, not spectacular in any one area |
| Utah Utes | The defense keeps them ranked. If they can't get Rising back soon they're in trouble |
| Texas A&M Aggies | Very talented team, has responded well from a dissapointing loss. Next two weeks will tell who they are |
| Ole Miss Rebels | They have the 8th strength of record per FPI, the highest of any one loss team. I don't think they're actually better than some of the teams off this list - namely Tennessee who has the 42nd SOR, but they deserve a spot to this point in the season |
| Fresno State Bulldogs | Two P5 wins and look like they might be the strongest G5 team. |
| Louisville Cardinals | They have 4 P5 wins. They're not far off from having lost two of those games, and none of the opponents are particularly good. |
