Meany_Vizzini Ballot for 2022 Week 8

Ballot Type: Computer

Submitted: Oct. 17, 2022, 12:26 a.m.

Overall Rationale: Accelerated ELO Rankings (resume-based poll). Combination of win/loss aELO and margin of victory aELO. This is the first week of the year that this poll is exclusively aELO rankings, not giving any weight to FPI or SP+.

Rank Team Reason
Clemson Tigers 32.1, +0.0 from last week, no position change from last week, 38.6 (1st) in win/loss aELO, 25.5 (1st) in margin of victory aELO.
Tennessee Volunteers 28.4, +3.9, +3, 37.3 (2nd), 19.5 (7th). The win over Bama greatly boosts their resume, but they have played too many close games to threaten Clemson for 1st, at this point.
TCU Horned Frogs 27.5, +1.8, -, 34.5 (3rd), 20.4 (6th). Another big win means TCU have defeated Oklahoma, Kansas, and Oklahoma State in their last three games.
Georgia Bulldogs 26.8, -1.1, -2, 29.0 (7th), 24.5 (2nd). At this point, they haven’t faced anyone of note aside from Oregon, but they have taken care of business against the teams they are scheduled to face.
Michigan Wolverines 25.7, +7.2, +8, 29.4 (5th), 22.1 (3rd). Accelerated ELO is finally taking Michigan seriously after a dominant win over Penn State.
Syracuse Orange 25.1, +6.8, +10, 33.5 (4th), 16.6 (12th). The Orange remain undefeated after beating NC State by double digits, massively improving their strength of schedule.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons 22.9, +0.2, -, 24.1 (9th), 21.6 (5th). The top 1-loss team in these rankings (OT home loss to #1 Clemson)
Alabama Crimson Tide 22.5, -2.9, -4, 23.2 (10th), 21.7 (4th). Bama only loses a few places after a 3-point road loss to #2 Tennessee.
Ole Miss Rebels 21.7, +2.1, +2, 28.1 (8th), 15.2 (15th). They got a strength of schedule boost from Kentucky this week, but their margin of victory is still holding them back compared to other undefeated teams.
UCLA Bruins 20.9, +2.4, +4, 29.3 (6th), 12.4 (22nd). The Utah win greatly bolstered their strength of schedule, but they’ve been in relatively close games (for a top 10 team) the last 4 weeks.
Ohio State Buckeyes 19.8, -3.2, -5, 20.9 (11th), 18.8 (8th). The best opponent they’ve faced so far this year might just be Toledo (who they beat by 56). The ND game looks like a blemish now, as ND’s loss to Stanford sees the Buckeyes lose a few places on a bye week. They will get their chances to prove their skill against Penn State and Michigan later in the year, but for now, Ohio State does not have a top 10 resume.
Oklahoma State Cowboys 18.8, -2.5, -4, 19.1 (13th), 18.4 (9th). A tough away OT loss to TCU (that they led most of the way) sees the Cowboys drop only a few places.
NC State Wolfpack 18.4, -2.1, -3, 20.4 (12th), 16.3 (13th). The top two-loss team in these rankings have only lost to undefeated teams #1 Clemson and #6 Syracuse.
Florida State Seminoles 16.3, +0.1, +5, 14.8 (18th), 17.9 (10th). Nobody wanted to be #14 (there is a massive gulf between #13 and #14), so it’s going to a 3-loss team. FSU has lost the last three weeks by a combined 18 points to #1 Clemson, #7 Wake Forest, and #13 NC State. They also have a win against #17 LSU.
Texas Longhorns 15.9, -1.2, +2, 14.2 (20th), 17.4 (11th). Iowa State kept it close, but Texas moves up a few places due to other teams losing.
Penn State Nittany Lions 15.8, -5.2, -7, 18.8 (14th), 12.8 (21st). They played well for a half before being demolished in the 2nd by Michigan. Still, PSU is a very respectable 1-loss team.
LSU Tigers 15.7, +0.2, +4, 16.0 (16th), 15.3 (14th). A win against #22 Mississippi State and losses to #2 Tennessee and #14 Florida State. The Florida win hardly moved the needle for them; they move up due to others falling.
Kansas State Wildcats 15.2, +0.5, +5, 17.5 (15th), 12.9 (20th). K-State only has one loss, but it is surprising that Tulane might be the best team they’ve faced so far. They have a huge opportunity against TCU this week.
USC Trojans 14.6, -4.7, -7, 14.6 (19th), 14.5 (16th). It’s tough to drop so far after a 1-point road loss to a ranked team, but Utah is the only real test USC has faced so far, and they didn’t pass it. They don’t have another one until Week 12 at UCLA.
Oregon Ducks 13.2, -2.2, +2, 15.6 (17th), 10.7 (24th). Washington State’s loss hurts the Ducks’ strength of schedule, but they move up a couple places due to others dropping.
Utah Utes 13.1, NR, 11.7 (25th), 14.4 (17th). Win a win over #19 USC, the Utes are ranked again in this model for the first time since the preseason. The loss to #43 Florida is what is holding them back.
Mississippi State Bulldogs 12.8, -3.8, -4, 11.3 (27th), 14.2 (18th). Margin of victory in their wins is keeping the Bulldogs afloat, now that they have lost to #17 LSU and #27 Kentucky.
UCF Knights 12.4, NR, 11.2 (28th), 13.5 (19th). Consistent wins get UCF a ranking, as their only loss is to #36 Louisville.
Tulane Green Wave 12.0, +0.3, +1, 13.8 (23rd), 10.1 (26th). Tulane stays ranked with another win. They have a win against #18 Kansas State, but their one loss was to #66 Southern Miss.
Kansas Jayhawks 12.0, -3.8, -5, 14.0 (21st), 9.9 (27th). Despite a second loss in a row, Kansas keeps their ranking. Their losses are to #3 TCU and #30 Oklahoma. Honorable Mentions: Purdue 11.4, Kentucky 11.3
