TheJeemTeam Ballot for 2018 Week 6

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Oct. 1, 2018, 5:58 p.m.

Overall Rationale: My hybrid poll utilizes two computer polls. A preseason component that I will phase out as the season goes along and a results-oriented poll. The preseason component is 30% this week and the results-oriented poll is 70%.The Preseason component is made up of Past season's results, Returning production, 2 year recruiting Avg., and Coaching continuity. The results-oriented component is made up of Winning %, Points per Game differential, Yards per Play differential, and Strength of Schedule. Once the overall rankings are developed, I split the teams that are close to each other into tiers and re-rank within the tiers. The remainder of the final tier (Tier P) that did not fit into the Top 25 and therefore just missed out on being ranked by me were Cincinnati, Michigan State, Boston College, Duke, Iowa, & Utah State.

Rank Team Reason
Alabama Crimson Tide 1/1 in Tier A
Oklahoma Sooners 1/1 in Tier B
Georgia Bulldogs 1/1 in Tier C
Clemson Tigers 1/1 in Tier D
Ohio State Buckeyes 1/1 in Tier E
Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1/3 in Tier F/G: Michigan was the only team in Tier F and I was going to rank ND as the top team in Tier G, placing them right below them. Bc Michigan was the only team in their tier and ND beat them H2H, I made a judgement call to combine the tiers so that that I could rank ND ahead of Michigan.
Penn State Nittany Lions 2/3 in Tier F/G: Because I combined the tiers, PSU also needed to be included in the ranking within the tier. I decided that PSU belonged ahead of Michigan due to the 1-point loss to Ohio State being their only on the season.
Michigan Wolverines 3/3 in Tier F/G: 7-point loss to ND, combined w/ scare vs. Northwestern has them below PSU.
West Virginia Mountaineers 1/3 in Tier H: Only undefeated team in tier
Washington Huskies 2/3 in Tier H: Better loss than Miami (5 points to Auburn)
Miami Hurricanes 3/3 in Tier H: Blowout loss to LSU isn't as good as Washington's narrow loss to Auburn
LSU Tigers 1/2 in Tier I: Did not combine Tier H and Tier I as I did with Tier F/G as Miami wasn't the only team in the Tier H. LSU placed above UCF as they are undefeated against a much more difficult schedule.
UCF Knights 2/2 in Tier I: Easier schedule than LSU and has also played one less game.
Kentucky Wildcats 1/1 in Tier J
Auburn Tigers 1/4 in Tier K: Best loss in group (1 point to LSU)
Florida Gators 2/4 in Tier K: Not as good of a loss as Auburn (11 pts. to Kentucky), but one more win against a tougher schedule than both Wisconsin & App. St.
Wisconsin Badgers 3/4 in Tier K: BYU is not a quality loss despite the buzz they've seemed to have gotten prior to losing to Washington this past weekend
Appalachian State Mountaineers 4/4 in Tier K: OT loss to PSU is quality loss, but have only played 4 games against a very weak schedule. Extremely skeptical of them in general, would not rank at all, let alone this highly, if I was doing a human poll.
Oklahoma State Cowboys 1/1 in Tier L
Mississippi State Bulldogs 1/1 in Tier M: My computer's favorite team all season is not only still ranked despite loss to Florida, but they make the Top 20. Only 2 loss team in my poll.
Stanford Cardinal 1/2 in Tier N: Despite having a loss, it's to highly ranked ND. Wins over Oregon & USC are better than anyone NC State has played.
NC State Wolfpack 2/2 in Tier N: Despite being undefeated, haven't really been challenged.
Colorado Buffaloes 1/2 in Tier O: Undefeated
Boise State Broncos 2/2 in Tier O: One loss to Oklahoma State
Oregon Ducks 1/7 in Tier P: Came out on top of a crowded group at the fringes of the ranking to get the final spot in the poll (see rationale for other teams). Oregon gets spot bc loss to Stanford is best of the group. Cincinnati is undefeated, but against a weak schedule.
