| Rank | Team | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 |
Ohio State Buckeyes
|
This team is still the #1 team in the nation and will continue to be until they lose most likely. |
| 2 |
Indiana Hoosiers
|
Indiana has looked insanely good, they are beating good competition and completely dominating middling Big 10 opponents. The Hoosiers are huge threats in the playoffs |
| 3 |
Texas A&M Aggies
|
The Aggies were down at halftime against LSU on Saturday evening, but 35 straight points in the 2nd half for A&M led them to comfortably winning this game (and Brian Kelly getting fired) |
| 4 |
Alabama Crimson Tide
|
This is NOT the same team that lost by two touchdowns to Florida St earlier in the season. Their previous 5 game stretch has been tough win after tough win and their schedule gets a bit easier as the season gets closer to the end |
| 5 |
Oregon Ducks
|
Oregon is still clearly a great football team, however their signature win against Penn St keeps looking worse and worse as time has gone on. |
| 6 |
Georgia Bulldogs
|
The Bulldogs are still very relevant in the playoff picture at the moment, their most difficult in conference opponent remaining is Texas who has huge question marks of course while surprisingly their biggest match up remaining is in rivalry week against Georgia Tech |
| 7 |
Ole Miss Rebels
|
Good bounce back after losing to Georgia the previous week in a game against Oklahoma, Ole Miss simply needs to take care of business the rest of the way and they should get an at large spot in the CFP |
| 8 |
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
|
While the Yellow Jackets haven't looked completely dominant, they have done something most teams have not managed so far, not losing a game. As mentioned before they have Georgia in the final week of the regular season ahead of them after they close out conference play against Pittsburgh |
| 9 |
Vanderbilt Commodores
|
Vandy continues to impress after Diego Pavia leads the Commodores to another victory this time over a strong Missouri team. They play against the Longhorns in Austin this upcoming week in what I expect to be a low scoring contest |
| 10 |
Miami Hurricanes
|
Miami still essentially controls their own destiny, winning the remainder of their games will likely bring the Hurricanes into the playoffs as either winning the conference (they need a bit of help to qualify for that) or as an at large team |
| 11 |
BYU Cougars
|
8-0 right now, but they have a difficult stretch of 3 games ahead of them with Texas Tech. TCU and Cincinnati up ahead so they need to lock in to stay undefeated |
| 12 |
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
|
After a rough 0-2 start (to two top ten teams) the Fighting Irish have now rattled off 5 straight wins all against quality competition. If this team simply plays the same way it has been playing all season, they should finish off their schedule at 10-2 and likely in conversation for an at large spot in the playoffs |
| 13 |
Texas Tech Red Raiders
|
I was starting to get really excited for this team, but a loss to Arizona St was a bit of a stumble. A shutout against Oklahoma St shows that it might just be a bump in the road and they can get back to their winnings ways |
| 14 |
Louisville Cardinals
|
While the Cardinals did lose to Virginia, their win against Miami shows that when this team is playing well, they can beat nearly anyone |
| 15 |
Cincinnati Bearcats
|
After a week 1 loss against Nebraska, Cincinnati has managed to rattle off 7 straight wins and matches up against Utah on College Gameday this Saturday |
| 16 |
Texas Longhorns
|
I still believe in the Longhorns if they are playing their best and the Red River Rivalry showed it. For as weak as they have looked against Kentucky and Mississippi St, they still managed to win those games |
| 17 |
Missouri Tigers
|
This Tigers team does have two losses, but they are only against Top 10 teams in Alabama and Vanderbilt. They have a much needed bye week to prepare to host Texas A&M in what might be the most important game for them all season |
| 18 |
Tennessee Volunteers
|
While Tennessee passes the "vibe check" I cannot really point at their resume and make a strong statement about them |
| 19 |
Virginia Cavaliers
|
Virginia is managing to win a lot of games, but they have room for improvement after only beating North Carolina by one point after they came up about 6 inches short of a two point conversion in overtime |
| 20 |
Oklahoma Sooners
|
I want to say the Sooners are stronger than where I have them placed, but they have stumbled a bit too much recently. Their remaining schedule of Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU is a double edged sword. It is very difficult and losing one of those games makes playoff contention much less likely, but if they win all of them it would be them out of playoffs even with 2 losses |
| 21 |
Memphis Tigers
|
Besides a fluke loss against UAB, Memphis has won every game they have played this season and is the front seat to take the 5th highest ranked conference champion slot in the CFP |
| 22 |
Houston Cougars
|
HOUSTON!!!! THIS IS FOR YOU!!!!! I bet you didn't expect to see a ranked U of H at any point this season, you were wrong. This team does keep surprising me and I hope they can keep it up |
| 23 |
Utah Utes
|
Utah only has two losses and those are against ranked teams Texas Tech & BYU. As mentioned before they are playing Cincinnati this weekend and will either jump up into the teens in the rankings or fall out of the rankings entirely. I do favor Utah in this game, but only by a touchdown or so. |
| 24 |
USC Trojans
|
USC manages to make it in near the end of these rankings because of their win against Michigan. Their high powered passing offense still does have a slim chance to see them in playoff contention but they will need to take down Oregon later in the season. |
| 25 |
Navy Midshipmen
|
Here is the good news for Navy, 7 games into the season and they have 7 wins, here is the bad news, their next 5 games are as brutal as it gets for a team in their conference. Their next 5 opponents are North Texas, Notre Dame, South Florida, Memphis & they finish the season in America's game against Army. If lightning manages to strike and they come out of this season undefeated they will be in the playoffs, but they very well could lose 5 in a row instead and limp into a bowl game. |
