OKgolfer Ballot for 2024 Week 16 & Bowls

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Dec. 10, 2024, 9:47 a.m.

Overall Rationale: Suddenly everybody has 2+ losses except Oregon (clear #1), Boise State, and three teams that either didn't play a 13th game (Indiana and Notre Dame) or haven't played it yet (Army).

Rank Team Reason
Oregon Ducks Undisputed #1
Ohio State Buckeyes Who should be #2? Nobody seems to want it this year. Ohio State has as good a case as anyone.
Penn State Nittany Lions Penn State actually improves by a spot after the loss with Texas and SMU also losing.
Georgia Bulldogs Georgia has the biggest collection of 10-win teams beaten, and also the biggest jump since last week.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Notre Dame desperately hopes no one remembers the NIU game. They haven't beaten a 10 win team, but they've beaten Texas's and SMU's best wins, and therefore are just ahead of both.
Texas Longhorns Two losses to the only 10 win team on the schedule don't look good. But only one regular season loss means the Horns stay in the top 10. The Texas A&M win might be the only thing keeping them there.
SMU Mustangs Similar to Texas, SMU has lost to both 10 win teams on the schedule but only had one regular season loss.
Arizona State Sun Devils Arizona State has two wins better than anything Texas and SMU can claim, but they did lose two regular season games to mediocre teams and therefore come in just behind that pairing.
Boise State Broncos Boise State took care of business, but drops by one spot because Arizona State jumped them. They are above Indiana on the strength of having beaten a single 8-4 team (Washington State), which Indiana did not do. Both teams' only loss is on the road to a top 2 team, but Boise State was competitive vs Oregon and Indiana wasn't vs Ohio State.
Indiana Hoosiers Like Texas and SMU, Indiana did not beat a 10 win team. In fact, they didn't beat a team that finished better than 7-5. They might be better than #10, but we have no idea. They're definitely pretty good though, since they beat all those mediocre teams.
BYU Cougars BYU drops a spot with Georgia jumping back into the top 10.
Tennessee Volunteers Tennessee is right behind BYU - they have the same record and both have one bad loss and one good win, but BYU's road win over SMU is better than Tennessee's home win over Alabama.
Alabama Crimson Tide The 3 loss Ole Miss-Alabama-South Carolina group come in just behind Tennessee. Ole Miss and Alabama are hard to separate since they didn't play head to head. Both beat Georgia and SC. Ole Miss split with the 8-4 teams LSU and Texas A&M, while Alabama beat LSU and 9-3 Missouri but didn't play A&M. Both lost embarrassing games, but Ole Miss's home loss to 4-8 Kentucky is worse. Alabama gets the edge by a hair.
Ole Miss Rebels
South Carolina Gamecocks
Clemson Tigers Clemson moves up a few spots with the win over SMU, but hits a hard ceiling named South Carolina.
Army West Point Army and Clemson are neck and neck for the final auto bid. Army's best win is over 9-4 Tulane and Clemson's best win is over 11-2 SMU. Both teams got blown out by the best team on their schedule. If Army beats Navy they will deservedly jump Clemson for the bid, but until then they don't have a second win to back it up.
Iowa State Cyclones
Syracuse Orange
Miami Hurricanes Beyond here nothing is changed
Memphis Tigers
UNLV Rebels Lost to the #9 team in exactly the way you would expect the #22 team to lose to the #9 team.
Colorado Buffaloes
Duke Blue Devils
Illinois Fighting Illini
