Muffinnnnnnn Ballot for 2024 Week 8

Ballot Type: Human

Overall Rationale: As always, wins and losses matter most. If you have the same record as another team, and you beat them, you deserve to be ahead of that team. While I did do some shuffling around, the teams in my top 25 did not change this week, as to me, there were no major upsets. Utah, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss were teams ranked by the AP who lost, but they didn't drop any in my poll because they were all unranked to start the week. I also predicted all of them to lose beforehand. There were quite a few battles last week, and most of them were great games. Unfortunately, most of them were also slop fests which ended up lowering my opinion of both teams who participated. One that did not fit that description was Ohio State-Oregon, who both played like top 3 teams. Oregon jumped up from #5 to #1 for me based on the body of work being more impressive for Oregon than Texas, but those two teams (with Ohio State right behind) seem to have separated themselves to some degree, although #4 and #5 from the Big 12 may have something to say about that. 17-25 stayed basically the same aside from Army and Pitt switching places. The entire SEC aside from Texas looks poor so far this year, with losses and poor play vs bad teams constantly. Alabama lost to Vandy after Vandy had already lost to Georgia State. Tennessee lost to Arkansas after 1-5 UAB was in a 3 point game with them with under 4 minutes to go (that's still the only FBS game UAB hasn't been blown out in). Georgia lost to Alabama one week before they lost to Vandy. Texas A&M and LSU are at the top of the SEC standings after they lost in nonconference to Notre Dame (who lost to NIU) and a 3-3 USC team respectively. Ole Miss lost to a 3-3 Kentucky team. Georgia gave up 31 points in a 10 point win vs the same Mississippi State team that Toledo was beating 35-3 5 minutes after HALFTIME (Toledo has since lost by 15 to Buffalo and by 5 vs WKU). Auburn lost to Cal at home, and Cal is 0-3 in ACC play. Anyway, this is to say that I think the SEC is being completely propped up by the media and preconceptions. Texas is great and can win the national championship this year, but behind them, it's a whole lot of mid (and bad). Of the 12 undefeated teams we had, the only one we lost last week was in the game where one was guaranteed to go down between Oregon and Ohio State. Our list now: Oregon, Texas, Iowa State, BYU, Indiana, Penn State, Miami (sorta), Navy, Army, Pitt, and Liberty. What a list.
