Overall Rationale: My poll functions as points standings rather than power rankings, awarding opponent-adjusted points for each win based on the Massey Ranking Composite. For the 2nd year in a row, the formula agrees exactly with the committee on the top 4, but after that, it gets a little fuzzy, especially when it comes to USC and Clemson. Whereas the committee severely punished the Trojans, the formula doesn't punish them much at all, simply because the teams sitting idle couldn't gain any points to jump them. Clemson, however, got a dominant win and was able to leap Alabama and Tennessee because of that 11th point. Just as the 12-team playoff will do in 2024 and beyond, the formula greatly rewards conference champions and elevates their ranking, especially for G5 teams as well.
