Overall Rationale: Expected results/Resume, leaning more heavily on the latter at the season progresses
Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Clear #1 team. Two wins over top 15 teams, both fairly dominant. Plus three more wins over ranked teams. Only true blemish is an escape on the road against Mizzou early in the season, and it's minor. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Currently have the best win, with a solid road victory over #4 in the country. Struggled against one or two mediocre teams, but they are clearly the second best team in the country. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Two wins over ranked opponents, one of which in the top 15. Handled most of their other opponents with relative ease. Only loss to #2 was closer than the final score suggests. |
| TCU Horned Frogs | Quite a few close calls, but they managed to find a way to win all but once. Only two ranked wins, but their opponents were mostly solid. I'm ranking them here but am glad to see them get the 3 seed. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Two wins against currently ranked teams, and gets head to head nod over Bama. A few escapes to mediocre teams. Clearly a rung below top 4, IMO. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Two wins over currently ranked teams, but a lot of close calls along the way. |
| Clemson Tigers | |
| Utah Utes | Three tough road losses, two of which against ranked opponents. Beating USC twice puts them here. |
| USC Trojans | |
| Kansas State Wildcats | |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | |
| Washington Huskies | |
| Oregon State Beavers | |
| Oregon Ducks | Possibly the toughest schedule in football this year. Losses to #1, #12, and #13, wins over #8 and #18. |
| Tulane Green Wave | Win over Kansas State very impressive in retrospect, and a few other solid wins too. |
| Florida State Seminoles | 1 point win in week one puts them 1 point ahead in Week 15. |
| LSU Tigers | Had they beaten Arkansas they'd likely still be a top 10 team. |
| UCLA Bruins | |
| South Carolina Gamecocks | Really hard team to rank. Two wins over top 10 teams, but three losses to .500 teams. Weird. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | Similar story to SCar. |
| Texas Longhorns | |
| UTSA Roadrunners | 10 game winning streak after starting 1-2 is impressive. |
| Troy Trojans | |
| Mississippi State Bulldogs | |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | At least their football team is ranked. |
