Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Honestly the only reason why Georgia is #1 still is because they’ve absolutely brought it in the biggest games, but they’ve looked pedestrian on more than one occasion against more mediocre opposition. Barring a shocking upset against Georgia Tech, Georgia is probably in the CFP no matter the result of the SECCG. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Ohio State did not play their best game against Maryland, but they did just enough. It was a one-score game until a late defensive TD to push it to a 13 point lead. This is arguably the most talented team in the nation and can make a huge statement against Michigan next weekend. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Michigan squeaked out a win just like fellow Top 4 teams this weekend. It took a last second FG to get past Illinois but the bigger concern right now is the health of Heisman-contender Blake Corum. If he can’t play against Ohio State, Michigan is in big trouble. |
| TCU Horned Frogs | I don’t know how they keep doing it, but TCU survived again to remain undefeated. It took a sequence of events that surely would have come under heavy criticism if it didn’t work, but alas it worked and TCU got the FG just in time. TCU has already clinched a Big 12 championship game spot but their playoff spot is still sitting there precariously. |
| USC Trojans | USC picked up a huge win over crosstown rival UCLA and are in a good spot for their playoff hopes. A game over Notre Dame can make or break it but USC knows they’re playing for the PAC-12 championship the week after. |
| LSU Tigers | LSU joined several other SEC teams in scheduling a cupcake in the 2nd to last week of the season. They won’t win any brownie points but Tennessee’s loss means LSU will move up. |
| Clemson Tigers | Clemson blew out Miami to further add to the misery of the Cristobal era, and in doing so jump Alabama. The Tigers played a strong and efficient game on both sides of the ball and their upcoming game against South Carolina got a lot more interesting. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Alabama beat up on a cupcake like a handful of other SEC teams did this weekend. They won but get jumped for that reason. |
| Oregon Ducks | Oregon finally beat Utah after their blowouts to the Utes last season, but it wasn’t pretty. Regardless, Oregon rebounded nicely and their defense took over and forced a nightmare game for Cam Rising. |
| Washington Huskies | Washington beat up on Colorado to impress absolutely nobody. They fall behind Oregon, despite the H2H, because of Oregon beating a strong team and an overall weaker resume, but just barely. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Penn State’s played their 2 best games of the season in the last two weeks with an efficient offense and stonewall defense. However, doing it against the like of Rutgers isn’t going to impress many. PSU is really lacking a signature win for their resume. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | KSU held off West Virginia in a high scoring affair that probably wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Wildcats are the best 3 loss team in the country and are a win away (or a Texas loss) from the Big 12 championship game. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Tennessee lost the shocker of the week getting blown out on the road by South Carolina. The Vols are now eliminated from playoff contention and can only hope to end the season strong against Vanderbilt, but they lost Hendon Hooker potentially for a while. |
| Utah Utes | Utah lost a really ugly game against Oregon in which Rising played maybe his worst game of his life. The defense kept the Utes in it but the offense was unable to do much. The high hopes from the season have just turned into feelings of dissatisfaction. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | Notre Dame is surging now after a 44-0 win over Boston College. The defense is playing at a high level and while the offense isn’t fully trustworthy, it’s better than it was at the beginning of the season. Notre Dame can fly up even higher with a win over USC. |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | Maybe they got caught looking ahead, but UNC lost in an upset to Georgia Tech and effectively ended Drake Maye’s Heisman candidacy. The freshman had his worst game of the season and when he’s not able to carry UNC, the Heels will struggle. |
| Florida State Seminoles | Mike Norvell has quietly made FSU relevant again and has the Noles at 8-3. He’s done a great job weathering the storms early in his tenure and is now reveling in the job he’s done. |
| UCLA Bruins | UCLA dropped their 2nd straight in a heartbreaker to USC. The Bruins offense played excellent but UCLA couldn’t get the stops on defense. Still, it’s been a brilliant season for Chip Kelly’s team. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Ole Miss inexplicably dropped a terrible one to a struggling Arkansas. Maybe it was a letdown after nearly beating Alabama but regardless their defense got run over and their offense struggled. |
| Tulane Green Wave | Thanks to UCF’s choke job, Tulane is back in control of their for the NY6 spot alongside Cincinnati. They won big again and get to play Cincinnati for not just a chance to play for the AAC title but to likely host it too. However a loss could end those hopes. |
| Cincinnati Bearcats | Cincinnati took care of Temple and host Tulane for the right to play in the AAC title game. However, if UCF wins and Cincy loses they’ll miss out. |
| Oregon State Beavers | Oregon State is an 8 win team. Jonathan Smith has done an incredible job righting the ship at Oregon State and I’m sure he’d love nothing more than to ruin the end of Oregon’s season, potentially costing them a PAC-12 spot. |
| Coastal Carolina Chanticleers | CC didn’t play this weekend following their game against Virginia being cancelled after the tragic shootings on campus. Coastal finishes out the season with a road game against James Madison. |
| Troy Trojans | Troy is a quiet 8-2 team and possibly not eliminated from NY6 contention. However it’s an uphill climb that needs a lot of outside help. |
| South Carolina Gamecocks | South Carolina delivered the shock result of the weekend when they obliterated Tennessee. Shane Beamer’s name will be coming up in head coaching searches and he’ll be an even hotter commodity if his Gamecocks can beat Clemson and end their CFP dreams. |
