Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Georgia was kept within arm's reach by Mississippi State, but broke away in the 2nd half and won pretty easily. Georgia clearly shows up for the big games, but then don't show up the same way for other teams. Regardless, it's hard to see Georgia losing until the CFP. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Ohio State looked more like the OSU we got used to seeing against Indiana. CJ Stroud and the offense had another huge day, but the injuries are starting to pile up. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Michigan won pretty easily over Nebraska. Even if they don't put up the massive scores as often as Ohio State, they control games with their defense and ground game. There's a lot of talent there, it just shows up differently. |
| TCU Horned Frogs | TCU got used to winning in high scoring shootouts and 2nd half comebacks, but this time they won a low-scoring game. Beating Texas on the road was another huge step for TCU but they still have a very slim margin for error in the CFP race. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Similar to Georgia, Tennessee was kept in check by Missouri early on. Unlike Georgia, Tennessee pulled away and won big. Tennessee is in a really good position to make the CFP if they win out and get to sit back and watch Georgia and LSU duke it out in the SEC championship. |
| USC Trojans | USC beat up on lowly Colorado. While their defense isn't all that special, their offense is elite, and the Trojans are the PAC-12's last remaining hope to make the CFP. They can get a big chance to boost their resume with their season ending against UCLA and Notre Dame. |
| LSU Tigers | Who would have thought that LSU would be the SEC West champion after their season opening loss to Florida State? They clinched it in part due to beating Arkansas, even though it wasn't pretty. Harold Perkins had himself a dominant game and is the biggest reason why LSU won. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Alabama nearly went on their first losing streak in nearly a decade but did just enough to hold off Ole Miss. This team just doesn't feel as good as we're used to seeing and the offense might be too reliant on Bryce Young. |
| Clemson Tigers | Clemson's resume is getting weaker by the week with most of their marquee wins falling apart (Wake, NC State, and Syracuse). The Tigers did beat Louisville who was one of the hotter teams in the country and remain on track to win the ACC. |
| Utah Utes | Utah feels like a forgotten about team thanks to their earlier losses to Florida and UCLA. The Utes are still overall a good team and are in a groove after obliterating Stanford. If they can beat Oregon this weekend, they'll almost certainly be playing in the PAC-12 championship game. |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | Even though he probably won't win it, Drake Maye should be a Heisman finalist at the moment. UNC has won 6 straight and is doing it with an explosive offense. UNC is in good position to make a NY6 bowl |
| Washington Huskies | Washington improved to 8-2 after beating rival Oregon in Autzen. DeBoer has been a godsend for a program that looked like it was spiraling after the Jimmy Lake disaster. Michael Penix has also been a huge pickup for Washington. The Huskies need some help to make the PAC-12 championship game, but this season has been beyond expectations for them. |
| Oregon Ducks | Oregon's weekend ended with major disappointment when they lost to rival Washington at home. The loss ended their CFP hopes and Bo Nix's Heisan campaign, but also hurt their PAC-12 title hopes. They're still tied for 2nd with Utah in the conference and that's who Oregon plays next. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Ole Miss nearly pulled it off, but ultimately they lost to Alabama for the 7th straight season. That dropped Ole Miss to 8-2 and while it's been a good season for them, it's gotta when they blew a leads to both LSU and Alabama and lost, which cost them the SEC West, the CFP, and possibly a NY6 bowl. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | Even at 7-3, Kansas State has one of the strongest records this season. Some really nice wins where KSU looked impressive, and their losses aren't terrible. The Wildcats are on pace to get a rematch with TCU for the Big 12 title. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Penn State put together arguably their best performance of the season against Maryland. What's hurting PSU is their lack of notable wins that strengthen their resume. Part of that is the scheduling, but the losses to Michigan and Ohio State took away those chances. |
| UCLA Bruins | UCLA lost a really bad one to Arizona who was 1-5 in the conference going into Saturday. The loss really hurts UCLA's PAC-12 title hopes as they're now behind a few other teams and they probably won't make the NY6 as an at-large. |
| UCF Knights | UCF has now inserted themselves as the leaders for the G5 NY6 bid. UCF beat Tulane on the road and are atop a 3-way tie with Tulane and Cincinnati in the American. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | Notre Dame for the first half looked like they were going to ease their way to another win. Notre Dame in the second half tried their best to blow a 35-3 lead. ND is one of the weirder teams this season but looks like they're righting the ship over the last few weeks. |
| Florida State Seminoles | Mike Norvell isn't getting enough credit for seemingly reviving the FSU program after the state Jimbo and Taggart left it in. It's taken a few years and a near complete reset with the roster, but he has Florida State returning to relevance. Their win over Syracuse was arguably their best overall performance this season. |
| Duke Blue Devils | Elko is one of the coaches of the season for the job he's done with Duke. A program that's normally hard to find success at is 7-3 this season. They won't play for the ACC title but it's been a successful season for Duke nonetheless. |
| Tulane Green Wave | Tulane is the G5 surprise team of the season and it's not even close. Despite losing a close one to UCF, Tulane showed they're a good and tough team. Tulane is tied atop the AAC with UCF and Cincinnati, but they're behind both of them in the standings. |
| Coastal Carolina Chanticleers | Coastal Carolina is 9-1, but it's a weird 9-1. They haven't exactly looked great for parts of the season but normally just did enough to get by. The Chanticleers are vulnerable though because of Grayson McCall's absence. |
| Cincinnati Bearcats | Cincinnati beat a pretty good ECU team that blew out UCF earlier in the season. The Bearcats are still in a AAC title game spot thanks to UCF beating Tulane, but their season ending game against Tulane will decide that spot. |
| Oregon State Beavers | Oregon State returned with a big win this weekend. It's not the best team, and there's a glaring weakness at QB, but the rest of the team is pretty solid and can play with most teams in FBS. |
