Overall Rationale: In an ordinary year, it would be easy to compare apples:apples. However, 2020 is anything but ordinary. Teams are not playing comparable schedules and equal games. Thus, this year more than most is showing the biases of brand value and "the eye test". Which is completely fine if clearly stating you are using that metric.For me, the eye test is secondary to tangible, on-field, results. As such, my ranking of Coastal Carolina is higher than average.Example: Even if you were to say their G5 schedule is less-than (in a normal year I would agree) than Ohio State and say it's worth half-credit, their 11 wins would still trump OSU's 5 (5.5 > 5). Additionally, and more importantly, Coastal has the better group of wins.Coastal: Louisiana, Appalachian State, BYUOhio State: IndianaObjectively, Coastal clearly deserves to be ahead of Ohio State. They've played and won more games, and have the better wins. Do I believe Ohio State has more talent? Yes. But anointing them as a top-four team without playing a satisfactory schedule is to devalue the regular season and declare it null and void.At some juncture, on-field results have to matter or else wins and losses do not. In a normal year of 12 games played, Coastal might not even be in my top 10. However, some teams are at eight or nine games, and the Pac-12 and Big Ten are not even to that. Ohio State certainly isn't.
