crownebeach Ballot for 2019 Week 11

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Nov. 3, 2019, 3:26 p.m.

Overall Rationale: Think of this as an "if team X played all the teams below them, they'd have a winning record" ranking. It won't agree with the playoff rankings release, because I have no bonus for quality wins and I do *give* a bonus for MOV, within reason. If you lose because you lose five fumbles, I'll be nicer to you than if you lose because you gave up a million yards. I really like yards per play stats and avoid head-to-head.

Rank Team Reason
Ohio State Buckeyes /bye/
Clemson Tigers Not technically /bye/, but basically
Alabama Crimson Tide /bye/
LSU Tigers /bye/
Penn State Nittany Lions /bye/
Utah Utes For all the abuse I've heaped on Andy Ludwig, he had a long-term plan and established it even when it wasn't clicking early. Utes are vulnerable to the right matchup, but they're playing tremendous football right now.
Auburn Tigers Auburn is so confusing. A week after allowing 500 yards to LSU but only 23 points, AU gained 500 yards and scored only 20 points. I could comfortably put this team anywhere from 6th to 14th.
Oklahoma Sooners /bye/
Georgia Bulldogs Playcalling, especially in the red zone, is still a problem. Otherwise, UGA is in amazing position right now -- being slept on because of one silly loss. Scoreline closer than the game, and Florida was never really in a winning position.
Oregon Ducks The Ducks exorcised all their defensive issues at once: the pass rush looked vicious, and they clamped down aggressively on underneath/YAC routes, which had been a problem the past few weeks. The most hard-nosed, defensive-minded 56-24 blowout I've ever seen.
Florida Gators I actually kinda thought Florida was going to win the Cocktail Party. Yeah, swing and a miss on that one.
Wisconsin Badgers /bye/
Michigan Wolverines /bye/
Baylor Bears The Baylor defense is very, very good, and Charlie Brewer can hang, but the OL is a hot mess. This team could win the Cotton Bowl, but it's hard to see them as a serious playoff contender rn.
Minnesota Golden Gophers Too many damned /byes/ this week
Memphis Tigers Memphis football is like watching NBA All-Star Weekend. I mean this in the nicest possible way.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish That was a bad look. VT isn't great. But at the same time, fumble return touchdowns are the ultimate bad luck plays -- I still think the Irish are basically fine, just not contenders for a high-grade bowl.
Iowa Hawkeyes /bye/ (that's *nine*, so far, but who's counting?)
UCF Knights Reports of UCF's demise were premature. They're not gonna win the American but they're fine, y'all.
Oklahoma State Cowboys A long shot for the Big 12 title game, but not mathematically eliminated!
Cincinnati Bearcats For the second time this season, Cincy needed a pick six to escape with a win. It's not as cute a look against ECU as it is against UCF.
Indiana Hoosiers We're not talking just "good for Indiana" good. IU is...really seriously good. I don't think they're beating Penn State on the road, but Michigan in Bloomington? ...let's talk.
SMU Mustangs Did pretty much what I expected them to against Memphis -- hung around, made it interesting, had a nice little track meet. The Ponies can score on anybody, but they need help from Cincinnati in the G5 race.
Iowa State Cyclones Has lost more winnable games than just about anybody. The memes if they beat OU are going to be unbelievable.
Boise State Broncos The best thing about Boise this season had been its defense, and SJSU tore that all to ribbons on Saturday, but in this house we respect the G5.
