TheJeemTeam Ballot for 2019 Week 8

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Oct. 14, 2019, 6:50 p.m.

Overall Rationale: My poll is a hybrid. I take the results of a computer poll of my own creation and split the teams into tiers based on where it makes sense to break the values. I then look at just the teams within the tiers and re-rank within them based on my observations and feelings of the teams.Computer poll has a preseason component and a performance-based component. I phase the preseason component out as the season goes along. For this week, the preseason component is down to 15% of the overall calculation.

Rank Team Reason
Ohio State Buckeyes 1/1 in Tier Aa: No one comes close to bumping Ohio State from the top with the Buckeyes on a bye.
Alabama Crimson Tide 1/1 in Tier Ab
Clemson Tigers 1/1 in Tier Ac: Clemson looking better after sticking it to Florida State this weekend. Still not enough to pass Bama though.
Wisconsin Badgers 1/1 in Tier Ad: Wisconsin and Ohio State seem to be on a collision course for the Big 10 Championship.
LSU Tigers 1/2 in Tier B: Want to rank LSU higher after win over Florida, but my computer actually had them in 6th, so this was the highest I could rank them given my tiers system. Some impressive looking teams ahead of them though.
Oklahoma Sooners 2/2 in Tier B: Both Oklahoma and LSU have a 1 TD win over Texas, but LSU is bumped ahead of Oklahoma, as the Sooners don't have a win of the same quality as LSU's win over Florida.
Penn State Nittany Lions 1/2 in Tier C: PSU is undefeated with a dominant Defense. Oregon has 1 loss with a great Defense. PSU gets the edge.
Oregon Ducks 2/2 in Tier C: Oregon's only loss being a close one at the hands of a good Auburn team means they are the highest ranked team with a loss.
Auburn Tigers 1/3 in Tier D: Quality wins over Oregon and Texas A&M and their only loss being to Florida put them at the top of this tier. Can't put them ahead of Oregon despite the head-to-head win due to my methodology.
Georgia Bulldogs 2/3 in Tier D: Bad looking loss to South Carolina bumps the down pretty low. Stay ahead of Notre Dame due to head-to-head win.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3/3 in Tier D
Florida Gators 1/4 in Tier E: Have a win over a good Auburn team and only loss is to a very good LSU team. Good enough to put them at the top of this tier.
Michigan Wolverines 2/4 in Tier E: Only loss is to a very good Wisconsin team. Have a win over a good Iowa team.
Boise State Broncos 3/4 in Tier E: Could not put them ahead of Florida or Michigan despite being undefeated due to weak schedule. Best win is a close one against a mediocre Florida State team.
Baylor Bears 4/4 in Tier E: Undefeated, but lucky to be there. Have played many close games against average competition.
Utah Utes 1/2 in Tier F: Only loss to a decent USC team
Missouri Tigers 2/2 in Tier F: Only loss to a decent Wyoming team, but not as quality of a loss as Utah's.
Cincinnati Bearcats 1/6 in Tier G: At top of tier due to win over UCF and only loss being to my #1 team (Ohio State)
SMU Mustangs 2/6 in Tier G: Decided that they, along with App St. are the next two teams. Both undefeated with wins over P5 opponents. Give SMU edge due to slightly better best win (TCU compared with UNC for App St.) and having played in one more game.
Appalachian State Mountaineers 3/6 in Tier G: See SMU explanation.
Iowa State Cyclones 4/6 in Tier G: Both Iowa State and UCF are 4-2, but Cyclones get the edge due to having losses to better quality teams (Iowa/Baylor compared with Pitt/Cincinnati for UCF)
UCF Knights 5/6 in Tier G: See Iowa State explanation.
Michigan State Spartans 6/6 in Tier G: Find myself constantly saying that I'm ranking Michigan State as low as I can due to my computer loving them. Find themselves in the Top 25 despite sitting at 4-3. To be fair, all 3 losses are to good teams (Arizona State, Ohio State, Wisconsin).
Minnesota Golden Gophers 1/4 in Tier H: Somehow undefeated. Rewarded as top of this Tier.
Iowa Hawkeyes 2/4 in Tier H: Beat out other two teams in this tier to earn final spot in rankings (Washington/Memphis) due to quality win over Iowa State and two losses coming to Michigan and Penn State.
